Report on Influenza
arrived at Fishy Bay on the 276
In the early part of February 1890, while the Detachment of H.M.S. squadron was lying in Kowloon Bay, cases of Influenza came under my notice.
Being summoned on board H.M.S. "Ting Yuen" I found 22 of the sailors suffering from unmistakable symptoms of Epidemic Influenza or "La Grippe", as the recent epidemic has been styled in some parts of Europe; on the day following, 18 cases were recorded, on the third day 10, after which there were no fresh cases or any further signs of the disease among the ship's company on examination.
